Fall breaks and rolls

  • High rolls (for distance and/or for height)

Advanced Tsai-bake Switching Legs (180° steps using forward step and reverse step)

Upperbody Strikes

  • Chops inner and outer (usually to the carotid sheath) — hip rotation is important for maximum power
  • Outer/inner chop combination
  • Downward knuckle strike “over the top” to the opponent’s nose or eyeridge
  • Spinning backfist
  • Vertical elbow “over the top” (vertical looping elbow strike)
    1. May combine with trapping movement

Kicks

Defenses against Straight Punches

  • Two handed sliding block (lead hand initiates similar to sameside parry defenses learned previously) with knee counterattack variation attacks
  • Left/right block with knee attack (use front knee with glicha)
  • Left/right block with defensive kick (use front leg with glicha)
  • Left/right block with rear straight knee
  • Block against left or right punch attack using elbow gunts
  • Blocks against low punches (“gunting” or #4 of 360 degree defense)
  • Simultaneous parry and counter punch (or eye gouge) with other Block against right punch with left parry/modified scoop while stepping off the line and counterpunch.
  • Simultaneous parry and counter punch with same arm (one arm option)

Defenses against Hook Punches

  • Defense against roundhouse punch using step-away block with simultaneous counterpunch and grab with inside arm at crook of elbow with tsai-bake into chokes including:
    1. Blade
      1. Modified by grabbing under attacker’s armpit and using attacker’s shoulder against attacker’s own carotid
    2. Sleeper
    3. Elbow crook
    4. Yank the face back for takedown (including dropping the Opponent on the nearside knee)
    5. [Military applications]
  • Timing straight jab against hooks (and uppercuts)
  • Outside block with left (may use both arms) against right hook punch with simultaneous low right roundhouse kick
  • Outside block with right (may use both arms) against left hook punch with simultaneous low left roundhouse kick or roundhouse kick with ball of the foot the groin
  • Defense against roundhouse punch using step-away block with simultaneous counterpunch into hip throw set-ups

Straight Kick Off-the Line Defenses

  • Sidestep timing straight left punch (right punch depending on stance)
  • Sliding/stabbing hand defense while off the line to both sides with catch of Opponent’s kicking leg
  • Liveside movement using a side step with outer leg and straight kick with near leg to attacker’s groin followed by additional combatives
  • Deadside sidestep (modified Tsai-bake) movement using a body defense (side step) with punch to attacker’s head followed by additional combatives

Defenses Against Roundhouse Kicks

  • Rear straight kick timing defense
  • Timing defense sweeping the attacker’s base leg
  • If opponent is taller, against a high roundhouse kick, duck and push (#1 – 360 degree instinctive defense coupled with hip explosion)
  • Timing sidekick against opponent’s rear leg or midsection
  • Left side kick to base leg (both attacker and defender in left outlet)
  • Using timing, duck down to the left knee and step with right driving right shoulder into O’s base leg for takedown.
  • Show off: spinning low reverse sweep against high roundhouse

Defense Against Hairpulls From the Front

  • Immediate counterattacks while moving with the pull
  • Plant one hand firmly against attacker’s and execute immediate counterattacks moving with attacker
  • Defense against hairpull and knee attack to the head by gunting and attacking the Attacker’s groin or other anatomical vulnerabilities.
  • Leverage defense against hair pull (in Imi’s original curriculum)

Defense Against Rope Strangle Or Hair Pull From Behind

  • Turn instinctively and counterattack

Defenses against Knee Attacks

  • Tsai-bake to escape knees and clinch against the wall
  • Outside block against knees

Headbutt Strikes

  • Headbutt using the crown of the head against opponent’s nose or eyeridges
  1. Rear option is also available using similar technique against opponent’s nose or eye ridge
  2. Note: technique should not use crown of head against opponent’s crown of the head.

Defenses against Headbutts

  • Defense against headbutt using arm brace against attacker’s throat
  • Pluck and turn head away with arm brace
  • Pluck and turn head away with #1 horizontal elbow movement
  • Pluck and use uppercut or “end” uppercut elbow
    1. Simple uppercut elbow to face
  • Pluck and use brace to the throat

Release against Two People Gripping Arms

  • Quick release as soon as one person grip’s arms with counterattack and deadside movement (turning in option with the elbow.)
  • Kicking one attacker in the (either sidekick to knee or straight kick to groin/midsection/knee [this can be done with same leg executing both kicks or each leg executing a kick])
  1. If third attacker approaches, defender should kick attacker first making sure to turn the hips, which will make the release from  the other two assailants easier.

Duck against Chokes

  • Defender moves underneath, slaps groin, elbows, chokes, throws, etc.

Defense against Choke From Behind With Attacker Attempting a Rear Standing Mount

  • Spin attacker to the side while landing
  1. On all fours with spin in counter direction
  2. With full weight on the attacker (similar to Nelson) separating attacker’s pincer with legs followed with additional combatives

Release from Attempted Nelson Hold

  • Defender drops weight and stiffens arms

Arm Gab Release Into Rear Naked Chokes/Face Takedowns

  • Arm release into cross arm grab using nerve center on arm/elbow joint into underarm grab and neck grab, then slide arm into choke hold variations or face takedown

Arm Locks From Standing Position

  • From hip throw into arm locks
  • From mount into arm locks

Clinching

  • Half-nelson front
  • Full-nelson front
  • Half-nelson side (knee attacks)
  • Half-nelson rear (knee attacks and takedowns)

Defense Against Front Bear Hugs While Being Lifted and Arms Are Free

  • Outside leg thrust through attacker’s legs dropping one’s weight with horizontal elbows or alternate counterattacks
  • Outside leg hook with horizontal elbows and frontal attacks including punches, eye gouges, bites, etc.

Defense Against Front Bear Hugs While Being Lifted and Arms Are Pinned

  • Outside leg thrust through attacker’s legs dropping one’s weight with strikes to the groin with hands followed by additional counterattacks
  • Outside leg hook with horizontal elbows and knee attacks or hand attacks to the groin followed by additional attacks

Defense Against Rear Bear Hugs While Being Lifted And Arms Are Free

  • Outside leg hook and knock-knock hand defense against Opponent’s top hand (be aware Defender will be dropped as Opponent releases)
  • Outside leg thrust through attacker’s legs dropping one’s weight with rear horizontal elbow continuing to turn an unbalance attacker.
  • Outside leg hook with horizontal rear elbows and non-kicking leg  upward kick to the groin

Defense Against Rear Bear Hugs While Being Lifted And Arms Are Pinned

  • Outside leg thrust through attacker’s legs dropping one’s weight with  rear short body elbows and strikes to the groin wit hands
  • Outside leg hook with horizontal elbows and non-kicking leg upward kick to the groin followed by additional attacks

Defense Against Bear Hugs from the Side

  • Create distance with shoulder and groin attack followed by additional counterattacks
  • Option: Create distance with shoulder and groin attack followed by closing on Opponent with bodyhug and modified osoto-gari.

Throws

  • Ogoshi basic hip throw (out of upperbody defense)
  • Thrower maintains hip-to-hip or near inside-hip-to-hip alignment
  1. Arm around torso for bodylock throw
    1. Throw may be used against hook punch
    2. Throw may be used against attempted throw
  • Throw may be used from overhook/underhook clinch position against one arm
  1. Throw may be used from overhook/underhook position by securing both of O’s arms by reaching over and pinning O’s overhooked arm and underhook arms to clasp      your own hands into throw.
  • Koshi-guruma hip wheel throw with forearm at base of O’s neck (out of upperbody defense)
  • Harai-goshi combined hip throw and sweep (out of upperbody defense)
  • Ippon seo nage & soto ippon seo nage (deadside)
  • Ogoshi/soto makikomi hip one arm hip throw when O has taken your back with underhooks hold (clamp down on one of his underhook arms, position your hips, and launch him)
  • Kata guruma (fireman dump) knee variation
  • Tomoe nage (circular throw). The throw may be executed in two foot version yoko tomoe nage (3rd dan)
  • Sumi gaeshi (corner reversal) similar in concept to tomoe nage

Throw Defenses

  • Against a hip throw, scoot off hip and counterattack
  • Against a hip throw, sink weight and bearhug while extendingleg for tani otoshi takedown (Note: tai otoshi (body drop) may be used against a hook punch     where defender pulls attacker off balance as the attacker is falling  or stepping forward (to the right example).
  • Tai otoshi can be used in combination with uchi mata (inner thigh sweep) or oochi-gari (big inner reap)
  • A counter to tai otoshi is kouchi gari à stepping over the attacker’s trip/throw leg.
  • Against a lift and throw, grab thrower and hold on
  • Against a hip throw, sidestep and execute counter-hip throw
  • Against a hip throw, buckling his nearside leg
  • Defense against hip throws using body lock and dropdown to trip or to other counterthrows (simple body dump or suplex)
  • Defense against ogoshi (basic hip throw – position hips away and then step through with nearside leg making sure leg is strong to sweep all the way through to counter-throw O.)
  • Clinch into hip throw variations
  • Sukui Nage (back scoop throw) is a counter throw against several hip-type throws.Takedowns

Takedowns

  • Double leg tackle
    1. Drive shoulder through bulling neck à pancake into high mount or high sidemount
    2. Drive shoulder through yanking O’s knees and dropping knee into O’s groin
  • Feints into double leg takedown
  • Feints with front “bucket” te guruma take down grabbing crook and the testicles from underneath
  • Against clinch
    1. close distance, squeeze bodies together and wrap leg around     outside leg for takedown
    2. close distance, squeeze bodies together and wrap leg inside O’s leg for trip takedown
  • One leg takedown variations
    1. dip left knee to the ground into gentle kneel for right leg hook keeping head to the outside
    2. using “two step” process by stepping into “left” gentle kneel, then step into “right” gentle kneel, then inside hook with left (head may be to either side, although sameside as hook is preferable). Opposite movements used for opposite side.
    3. Grab opponent’s knee and pull-up while hooking other leg for take-down

Takedown Defenses

  • Against osoto-gari use a counter osoto-gari takedown
  • Straight offensive kick or knee to the face defense against double leg tackle takedown.
  • Sidestep body defense against single or double leg takedown with combatives (punches or palm heels) and continue counterattack
  • Preemptive uppercut and/or knee combination
  • Sprawl defense both on (“inside”) and off (“outside”) the line of attack against double leg tackle with combatives
    1. Defender uses outside defense to drive O to ground and immediately pops up to deliver heel stomps.
  1. Defender may apply direct brakes (right harm to attacker’s left clavicle or left arm to attacker’s right clavicle)
    1. Option of ripping the face
    2. Option of front headlock positioning on the balls of the feet
  • Knee combatives to the top of the head
  1. Defender may apply indirect brakes (right harm to attacker’s right shoulder or left arm to attacker’s left shoulder) à off-angle defense allowing for mount
  2. Defender may apply front headlock positioning on the balls of the feet
  • Defense against single leg takedown
    1. preemptive uppercut and/or knee combination
    2. preemptive tsai-bake with punches/double palm heels to the head
    3. using switch movement (withdraw targeted leg)
    4. using naked neck crank or by placing nearside hand on top of head and overhook under armpit to pressure neck up and away while pushing targeted leg back to break the hold.
    5. after sidestep double palm-heel, apply quarter nelson by placing nearside hand on top of head and overhook under armpit to pressure head down and away
    6. if caught eye pressure as leg is explosively drawn backward to release hold.
  • Osoto makikomi when O has taken your back with underhooks à use legs outside leg to hook around O (above his knee – either side)

Impact Weapon Defenses

  • Preemptive kicks with protective arm shield
  • Overhead one-handed strike sliding-stabbing defense

  2. remove stick by breaking over the farside knee
  • Overhead off-angle defenses à stepping forward with nearside leg combining sliding-stabbing defense
  • One-handed sideswing defenses using sliding-stabbing defense

The Mount

Maintaining the mount techniques and drills.  *Importantly, the following are more balance exercises than actual technique, but, importantly this shows what a trained fighter could do if he were to mount the defender

  • Swimming inside O’s bridge and escape attempts keeping proper body posture, positioning, and balanceà blade body against push attempts
  • Deflect arms across against low push à good transition into baby pressure hold from the mount or armbar variations.
  • Shift weight forward against low push à securing arm around back of O’s neck.
  • Hooks up to peel away O’s attempts at pushing your knees back à slide knees up after releasing O’s arm upward
  • Let O roll onto stomach à loosen legs slightly to allow O movement; if you tighten he can throw or roll you over.
    1. Rolling exercise letting O roll onto his stomach allowing for rear choke variations
  • Defending O’s bear hug from the bottom by eye gouges or bracing to the jaw/throat à insert forearm against O’s throat or jaw using other arm for support and pressure
  • Defending O’s bear hug from the bottom by sweeping legs in front into straddle with arm bar options under your armpit.
  • Defending O’s grab to your neck by eye gouges or inserting brace to throat and jaw
    1. Straight arm-bar option available
  • Inside hooks from mount to prevent push-throw
  • Defense against push from the bottom when D attempts to hook arms and pull off balance by releasing and regaining balance and initiative.
  • Top Mount position with splay into
  1. Head locks

  • Offenses (using feints) from the mounted position to let O turn on his stomach
  1. Let O turn onto stomach allowing reverse pincer
  2. Let O turn onto stomach while reaching around to grab O’s          arm and then execute the choke
  3. Cross grab (rt.) for shirt choke hold reaching around the back     with other hand to then secure the choke using the shirt

Advanced Armbar Applications

  • Counters to arm-bar defenses (beating the O’s defenses against your attempt)
    1. Switch to the other arm
    2. Move into triangular arm bar or triangular choke
    3. If O pushes D’s leg in, allow leg to move into triangular brace      with shin pushing against O’s throat.
  • (From the mount) arm-bar when O crosses arms to defend, slip        outside knee for triangular choke.
  • Arm-bar into knee lock when O stands up and successfully begins to  yank arm out à wrap inside leg around O’s leg and snake into knee    lock.

Advanced Sidecontrol/Sidemount Applications

  • From sidecontrol/sidemount, baby pressure hold (sidecontrol/sidemount à opponent is on back, securing defender with both arms around the neck using the blade of one arm, use shoulder and lean into opponent’s head [not to the side] by placing weight on the balls          of the feet)
    1. Can cross grab or place one hand on the head
    2. Can have one down [but preferably on the balls of the feet for maximum pressure]
    3. Can straddle
      1. Place arm underneath neck and other on forehead or chin to    apply pressure forward
      2. Place arm underneath neck and other hand on nose to apply pressure forward
    4. Can perform on all four fours by still leaning heavily in
    5. Can perform with opponent’s arm pressuring against own neck
  • Sidecontrol/sidemount à three armbar variations
  1. #3 Police palm up
  2. #3 Police palm down
  3. #6 police hold
  4. Straight armbar

Note: If O sits up, take nearside leg over to place lock with O on his side

  • Sidecontrol/sidemount into shoulder lock (figure 4 lock forcing O’s opponent of the ground)
  • Knee on O’s stomach using chokes and locks

  3. Neck crank from underneath while O is on his back à forearm on an angle while exerting facebar and clasping hands to pull O into the chest

Taking the Opponent’s Back

  • O is on stomach:
  1. Combatives to the back of the head
  2. Sleeper with elbow strike to the back of the neck
  3. Blade choke
    1. You may assert further control over the O by reverse grapevining your legs around O’s – your ankle/shin is wrapped around his upper calf (depending on respective heights)
  4. Twist head with chin or forehead
  5. Use shirt to choke and push head in opposite direction
  6. Chokes on the side using body technique and headlock position
  7. Police holds with opponent on stomach
    1. L Elbow pressure with wrist cavalier
    2. #3 hold using sameside arm grabbing opponent’s arm and using strong torque
  8. Nelson hold (one or two handed) with opponent on stomach (pressure/weight forward)
  9. Leglocks with opponent on stomach by placing outside leg in and hook
    1. Cross opponent’s leg and pressure forward
    2. If opponent turns, turn with opponent and apply lock
  • face opposite direction to cross leg and sit down for grasscutter hold by sitting and leaning back
    1. counter-defense by grabbing leg of locker before he sits down into the lock
  • If O sits up in mount to escape, use neck crank/lock

Note: may use filtrum or eyes to lift chin to enable arm to be snaked underneath opponent’s neck

  • Takedown with leglocks when you are on your back and O is standing
  1. Inside scissors position
  2. Outside scissors position
  3. Wrap-around and loop arm around outside of leg for takedown with outside leg push for Achilles lock
  4. Wrap-around legs and loop arm around inside of leg for takedown and kneebar
    • From rearmount, neck pressure/snap
    • From rearmount, facial cross-grab

Defenses against a Mount Attempt

  • Attack the O’s groin
  • Move to imbalance
  • Sliding/stabbing movement to shoot arm in below the O’s knee/leg to prevent mount and throw backward
  • Roll against any grab spinning opponent over
  • Look for armbars trap from the bottom
  • Arm bar from mount by deflecting out (knife defense technique) with counterpunch into police hold #6
  • Leg bar by grabbing underneath and rolling into leg bar
  • Punch defenses using initial strike to defend and break the angle followed by continuous punches to the defeat the attack.

Defenses against a Rear Mount Attempt

  • Drop from all fours onto back in defensive position for leg or knee thrusts
  • Slip underneath keeping head to armpit

Defenses When Caught in the Mount

  • Defense against O attempting arm bar with leg pincer from the top   mount
  1. Turn with O was he maneuvers into the arm bar and execute  own arm bar by pinning O’s leg to the mat with your knee
    1. Other counteroffensives will also work
  • Defense against leg lock/neck hook wrestling pincer leg splay (grapevines)
    1. Push across the face with one arm (also breaking the hold) while maneuvering legs to release use a push head back into leg lock with simultaneous arm bar
    2. If in grapevines, release by splaying legs wide and flattening them to the mat and bringing your heels tight to your buttocks to prevent his returning to mount with is heels hooked.
  • O is on all fours face down
    1. Guillotine with head pressed to torso
    2. Guillotine with head to the side
    3. Guillotine with arm
    4. Double arm catch behind the back
  • O has D in guillotine with outside leg kicking release à sit up into O with arm for eye gouges while yanking down on guillotining arm.

Defenses When Opponent Achieves the Rearmount

  • D is on all fours à tuck chin to bridge up and backdoor exit
  • If O secures hold àtuck chin while yanking down on choking or securing arm to bridge and then turn into the hold to break it

Advanced Leg and Ankle Locks

  • Heel/ankle figure 4 lock with D’s leg pincering
  • Double Achilles lock (both opponents seated) and O attempts to release with a kick à release leg and trap with both legs with the      option of folding over 2nd leg and trapping with your opposite leg for pretzel type lock
  • Achilles lock using Figure 4 against O’s leg crossed across D’s torso. Note: keep triangle lock tight. (beware of Opponent defending by compressing ankle under the folded knee)
  • Turn O onto his stomach with Achilles lock à may then turn into O for knee lock
  • Facedown leglock variations

Defenses against Leg and Achilles Locks

  • Defense against standing falling lock (grab opponent’s near leg and execute lock immediately by tightening around opponent’s Achilles and leaning back to preempt lock)
    1. Defender stands up with counterattack
    2. Note: Achilles leg bar can be executed while opponent is standing

The Guard

    3. Secure guillotine and then switch to shoulder half-nelson and turn into guillotine with O’s back down
  • Open guard armbars use a cross grab and push O’s head to acquire cross leg position
  1. Foreleg to chin
  2. Double armbar by securing O and extending hips
  3. Cross legs to catch opposite arm
  4. Slide legs up and grab crossed leg behind O’s neck while pulling O’s arm across into triangular choke
  5. Set up opposite side armbar with leg to shoulder and then movement to the opposite side catching the farside arm.
  6. Option of using modified triangle choke grabbing opponent’s other arm that pushes against attacker’s shoulder
  7. If O takes arm back then cross again into alternate side armbar
    1. May turn into omoplata.
  • Closed guard guillotine variations
  • In closed guard à rolling O over by
    1. taking away arm support and applying brakes to sameside leg with your sameside leg
    2. feint rolling one way and then use long movement to turn O the other way
    3. if O is chest to chest pressing close à attack eyes and nose to turn him over
  • Combined combatives and defenses from guard variations (preferably Z guard) to both attack and defend against combatives including edged weapon attacks
    1. Note: Law enforcement always on the same side to draw weapon with option of half seated turn to reposition correctly
  • Open and closed guards if O pulls one arm out, countermeasure with omoplata
  • Open and closed guards if O pulls your head toward him, counter with face push and slip leg around for armbar
  • Closed guard closing the distance and use the neck turn to sharply move O over with obvious consequences. Safety in training.
  • If O tries to use elbow to remove closed guard, slide leg up over shoulder into triangle choke.

Defending the Closed Guard

  • Attack the groin and stack
  1. L Knee drive variation by driving a knee from semi-squat position onto O’s chest
  • O pulls your head toward him, counter with thumbs to the eyes or facebar
  • Defense against opponent pressing down to compress you
  1. keeping hold of opponent’s arm with one arm and plucking at Achilles to take down into leg lock
  2. opponent rolls on his stomach
    1. rotational (similar to shirt defenses)

  • Defending the guillotine when O has either open or closed guard à defender turns body to whichever side attacker’s arm around back of    neck is while using near arm to gouge the opponent’s eye or attack the filtrum
  • Breaking the closed guard (danger of ribs being broken by enormous pressure of the guard) à move upperbody through and begin body movement either clockwise or counterclockwise to release legs while placing elbow triceps to side of O’s head to create brakes/pressure.
  • Neck bars by extending splayed (grapevine) legs to elongate O’s body
    1. With arms around O’s neck
    2. With arms trapping O’s arm and neck

The Half-guard (learned for countermeasures against it)

  • Half-guard leg traps and flip O over using brakes with legs
  • Half-guard leg controls:

  2. Scissors
  3. Both legs in
  4. Drill switching from one position to the other seamlessly
  • If D is in halfguard
    1. secure O under armpit for close body lock and continue
    2. keep arm inside to provide stronger defensive platform
    3. use cross facebar to slip down under O’s armpit to apply grass cutter leg bar or move to take O’s back. (Remember over/under grip prior to applying professional choke)
  • If D slips under O’s armpit while maintaining half-guard, secure O’s     body with hand over the top around O’s back and as O tries to force D down, sit up and reverse (flip) O
  • If O is in D’s halfguard
    1. use facebar to slip outside leg in to create separation while overhooking O’s inside arm to move up onto your elbow and then knee à may flip O over
    2. slip under his armpit and reach through to his (right) outside leg to flip over.
